David L. Thomas Obituary
David L Thomas
David L Thomas retired San Bernardino Police Captain passed away October 9, 2013 at the Villa's with his wife at his side.
Born January 3, 1932 in Buckner, Illinois to David and Beulah Thomas.
He joined the U. S. Navy in June 1949, served upon the USS Cacapon during the Korean War.
After the Navy he joined the San Bernardino Police Dept. where he started as a rookie cop walking a beat in downtown San Bernardino, also working as a dispatcher. He worked his way up thru the ranks first a Detective in Crimes Specific Burglary and Homicide, and then to Sergeant in Patrol, Lieutenant of Traffic where he was head of the Motorcycles which I believe was his favorite assignment, he thought so highly of all his officers. During that time of his career he was honored to be sent to the FBI academy at Quantico, VA. Where he excelled in his classes and received a tremendous amount of law enforcement training. He was president of the Police Association for many years, served on the police commission after retirement. In the last few years of his career he was promoted to Captain, which a desk job was a little subdued after such a variety of positions. Dave always enjoyed his hobbies. Built a fantastic H O Train set on a large board on our patio he had everything in that little miniature railway town. He flew u control airplanes in the school playground and had all the neighbor children coming to ask if Dave could play, they all loved him. Then he moved up to radio control airplanes and belonged to Marks flying club, flying his airplanes at Gilfilen field, Norton and East Highland. He spent many hours building his beautiful planes. I would always watch him out the window when he came home from flying to see if the airplanes were in one piece or in a box. That way I knew how to greet him when he came in the door. He retired from the P D in 1989 and with his wife Jo Ann they were able to take many trips in their Motor home and enjoyed several cruises. He was married to his loving wife Jo Ann for 54 years; he has two daughters Cathy Askwith (Mike) of Syracuse N Y. Kelly Loreman (Doug) of San Bernardino. 4 Grandchildren David Askwith (Maressa), Bethany Dant (Jared) Noel McCrary (Jason) and Cody Loreman; One Great Granddaughter Bella Dant. Step Great Grandsons Landon & Oliver Loreman His Brother Harry Howard Thomas (Christine) additional family, Michael, Donna and Ian Durant, his Step Mother Bette Thomas, Step Sister Valerie Wilson, Mother in law Lola Hanlin This man was very strong, had tremendous will to achieve many goals in life, loved his family dearly was a wonderful loving Husband , Father and Grandfather. Words could never express how much he will be missed.
