Gerardus 'Jerry' Van Deudekom, 89, a long time resident of Bellflower passed away surrounded by his loving family on April 20, 2013. He was born in Holland on May 11, 1923, one of 11 children. As a young man he survived the Nazi occupation of his homeland, sailed the world as a merchant marine, married his sweetheart, Petronella Van Schie in 1948 and then immigrated to America, settling in California. Together, they raised four wonderful and energetic sons. 'Pop' to the kids or 'Opa' to the grandkids, ran his own dutch bakery business for many years and was known within the Dutch community as the "Bakker." Along with his bride, Pop vacationed all over the globe, meeting new friends and charming people with his wit and funny stories. He will be remembered for his generous, loving, faith filled spirit, his great smile and twinkling blue eyes. Upon passing, Pop is survived by his wife of 64 years, Nell; 3 of their sons, Jerry (Sheila) of Brea, Adrian (Latham Jacoby) of Laguna Beach, Richard (Patricia) of Cerritos; as well as 7 grandchildren, Laura, Austin, Christina, Kyle, Melissa, Amber, Vanessa and many family and friends. He is preceded in death by his eldest son, Peter (Deborah) and youngest grandson, Matthew of Mission Viejo. On April 27, services were held at St. Bernard's Catholic Church, Bellflower, followed by a luncheon celebration. Heaven is richer for having you Pop; you will be greatly missed. In lieu of flowers, a scholarship has been established at St. Bernard's School. Please sign the guest book at www.presstelegram.com/obits.
