Helen M. Herbst
97, passed away Saturday, October 19, 2013, in La Verne with family by her side. Born October 3, 1916, on her grandparent's farm in York County, PA, she grew up in south central Pennsylvania, the daughter of the late Jacob E. and Mary H. Myers, a teacher/minister and a housewife. Her memory of women getting the right to vote in 1921 when she was five was a favorite story. She was a 1938 graduate of Elizabethtown College in Pennsylvania. In the mid 1940's she taught non-science subjects at Wellsville High School for 3 1/2 years. She married in 1946 and rejoiced in leaving the cold winters of the East to join her husband in La Verne where he was to teach mathematics at La Verne College.
Helen loved helping to nourish people. She had wonderful stories of being a waitress in Pennsylvania during WWII. After her children were in school, she worked many years as a Roynon Elementary School cafeteria worker. Relatives and friends from all over the US remember her many special family dinners for visitors on holidays or Sundays.
During her 67 years in La Verne she was an active member of the La Verne Church of the Brethren, a hand quilter with the LV CoB Ladies Aide group, an officer in the local Church Women United, a 20 year docent for the Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden, a faithful member of Claremont PFLAG, and an enthusiastic learner through traveling and visiting museums.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Albert F Herbst; her sister, Beatrice M Myers; and her daughter, Mary Alice Herbst. She is survived by her children: Ann Herbst (Ann Linville), David Herbst (Alice), Marie Nave (Gordon), Richard Herbst (Jane) and her grandchildren: Emily Herbst, Adrianne Scanlon (Cory), Michael Herbst, Jeffrey Herbst, and Lisa Herbst.
A memorial service will take place November 12, 2013, at 4 pm at the La Verne Church of the Brethren, 2425 "E" Street, La Verne, CA 91750. The family will receive friends following the service. Burial was private. Memorial contributions may be made to the La Verne Church of the Brethren, or the Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden, 1500 N College Ave Claremont, CA 91711.
