Karen Holte Obituary

HOLTE-Karen Ann Holte of Walnut passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her family on September 20. Karen was born May 3, 1943 in Longview, Washington to Bill and Dorothy Kirby. After graduating from high school, she enrolled at Washington State University, where she met Kirby Holte, her devoted husband of 47 years. Karen and Kirby moved to Walnut in 1971 with their children Barbara and Steven. Karen quickly became involved in Walnut Junior Women's Club, Vejar School Community Club, and later, Walnut Valley Women's Club, serving as president for all three. Volunteering was a passion. She chaired many projects, including the city's 30th and 40th anniversary celebrations. In addition to chairing the Family Festival parade, she was honored as its Grand Marshal in 1993. She also was proud of her role in starting Walnut's recycling program. Karen will be remembered for her energy, positive attitude, and sense of humor, even while battling her long illness. She will be dearly missed by her husband, Kirby; daughter Barbara Schussman and husband Rob of Orinda, CA; son Steven Holte of Riverside, CA; grandchildren Jason Holte, Karen Schussman, and Megan Schussman; sister, Janet White and husband Dan of E. Wenatchee, WA; nieces and nephew; and many long-time friends. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. To honor Karen, donations can be made to Karen's Scholarship Fund, which will be administered by the Walnut Valley Women's Club and used to help local students attend college. Donations to Walnut Valley Women's Club may be sent to Jeanie Stowell, 20215 Barnard, Walnut, CA 91789.

Karen shared her bright smile and wonderful sense of humor with all of us on Tufts Circle. She was always organizing get-togethers for the entire neighborhood, most of the time in her home. We were always warmly welcomed and with a smile that lit up the room. She always had a positive attitude and was just a very special person. I feel very priviledged to have known her. Our condolences to Kirby and family.

I remember well the first time I met Karen. They had just moved to Walnut and I was at Suzanne Middle School setting up for a Lunch with Santa sponsored by the Walnut Jr. Women's Club. She came in and, thinking it was a "drop the kids off" kind of event, asked if she could leave Barbara and Steven. We hesitated, but there was just something about Karen and we said OK. When she left I remember saying, "We need to get her into Juniors and we did! She was delightful with her sense of humor, a twinkle in her eyes and a warmth that always made one feel welcome. I moved from Walnut 31 years ago, but always knew how Karen and some of the others from the Walnut "group" were doing through mutual friends. I last saw Karen at a wedding reception about five years ago and had a chance to visit briefly with her. The smile and twinkle that I remembered from years ago were still there along with her warmth. My thoughts and prayers go out to Kirby and family.

Karen contributed to some of my fondest memories in Walnut. She was a kind, smart, beautiful and generous lady whose volunteerism contributed greatly to the community she loved. Her kindness and laughter will be greatly missed. My deepest condolences to her family.
