Kathryn Russell Obituary

RUSSELL-Kathryn Elizabeth (Barker) Russell, age 91, passed away peacefully on December 25, 2010. She is survived by a younger brother, Mark V. Barker, Jr.; children Kathy and Stuart along with their spouses; and grandchildren Jeff and Veronica. She was born on November 13, 1919 in Durham, North Carolina to Mark "Virgil" Barker and Iola (Hall) Barker. Kathryn was affectionately known to many as "Mom", "Momma Russ", "Scarlet", "Granny", and "Granny K". She will be remembered for her sense of humor, an interest in others, her fun-loving and spunky attitude, and for bringing a bit of Southern Charm to California. She would often refer to others with endearing names such as "Honey", "Sugar", and "Sweetie Pie". She worked in a department store and briefly sang on a radio program before marrying Ira William Russell and moving to the Los Angeles area in 1959. Kathryn worked at Monrovia Police Department as a police matron and court clerk for 35 years, and sold dog licenses for the Sheriff's department while also volunteering with the Red Cross before final retirement. Services will be held at Douglass & Zook Chapel of Remembrance Funeral Home, Monrovia, CA on Sat, January 15, 2011 at 3:00 PM.
