Lorain Kathleen Youngberg Lungren Obituary
Lorain Kathleen Youngberg Lungren

(96), born November 25, 1917, passed away November 27, 2013 in Sacramento CA. Devoted wife of the late John C. Lungren, M.D. who practiced medicine for 45 years in Long Beach CA. Lorain was born and raised in Chicago, IL, the granddaughter of Swedish and Irish immigrants. A beautiful and beguiling fashion and photographer's model at John Robert Powers Agency and an aspiring actress, Lorain danced with June Taylor on the N.Y. stage and worked with famous puppeteer Burr Tillstrom at the 1939 N.Y. World's Fair. Moving to L.A. to pursue her career, she met John "Jack" Lungren, M.D. They married on June 15, 1943. Just before Jack left to serve as a front-line infantry surgeon in Normandy during WWII, Lorain discovered she was pregnant. She proudly introduced him to his first son, John Jr., upon his return from the European Theater in late 1945. Indefatigable in her dedication to raising their 7 children, Lorain served as room mother, speech competition judge and faithful parishioner at St. Barnabas and St. Anthony's Catholic Schools and Parishes. She served on the Long Beach Symphony Guild, the Long Beach Memorial Hospital Medical Auxiliary and the Junior League of Long Beach, among others. Lorain organized many political fundraisers for congressional and presidential candidates from the 1950's-1990's. Predeceased in 2000 by her husband of 57 years; sister, Bette Jane Sirota; brothers: Larry and Edward Dunn. Lorain is survived by her 7 children, John C. Lungren Jr., (Nancy Skwarek), Daniel E. Lungren (Bobbi Kolls), Christine Lungren-Maddalone (Raymond), Loretta Lungren Vestermark (Gary), Brian F. Lungren (Nancy Wallace), Patricia Lungren Partridge, Elizabeth Jane Lungren; 16 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. A Rosary will be said at 5 pm on Friday, Dec. 6 at All-Souls Cemetery Viewing Room, 4400 Cherry Avenue; the Funeral Mass will be held at 1 pm on December 7 at St. Barnabas Catholic Church, 3955 Orange Avenue, Long Beach. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St. Barnabas Catholic Church or the John C. Lungren, M.D. Pre-Professional Medical Scholarship at the University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame IN. Please sign the guestbook at
