Sarah Kathleen DeGood

Obituary Condolences

DeGood, Sarah Kathleen
March 6, 1940 - April 29, 2014

Born in Pasadena, CA, married to Paul DeGood, April 29, 1984. Kathleen died at their home in Altadena, CA, after a long battle with respiratory ailments and, more recently, cancer. Her passing was peaceful and her husband and daughter, Dianne Reilly, were with her at the end. She is also survived by brother Stephen Nichols, sister-in-law Karen Nichols, and stepsons Michael and Mark DeGood. She was preceded by her parents Carmen and Harold K. Nichols, and brother Harold Nichols.

A 60-year resident of Altadena and Pasadena, Kathleen graduated from John Muir High School in 1957, and held a series of entry level jobs before becoming Assistant Librarian at Stanford Research Institure in South Pasadena in 1965. That was the beginning of her career path in library management and business research. She pursued those areas in subsequent positions at, among others, World Trade Center, The Capital Group, Office of Thrift Supervision, Price Waterhouse Coopers, and IBM. She retired in 2009.

Kathleen was was an extremely intelligent and tireless worker, and could readily adapt to any given work situation. For example, although her formal education ended with high school graduation, virtually every company she worked for required a Master's degree in Library Science for the position she was applying and she was selected and hired over all other applicants at the aforementioned employers. Finally. she served as President of the Southern California Chapter of the Special Libraries Association in 1981-82.

On learning of her passing, an old and dear friend wrote,
"Everyone who knew her admired her. We who knew her best treasured her." That sentiment was typical of those expressed by the many who responded upon being apprised of her demise. Her death leaves a void in the lives of her family and her many friends and neighbors, and she will remain in their thoughts and memories for years to come. We shall miss you, Kathleen.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to the West End Shelter for Animals at 1010 E. Mission Blvd., Ontario, CA, 91761.
