Thelma Robbins Obituary
Thelma Robbins

1911 - 2012

Thelma LaVern Robbins born November 16, 1911 in Colorado Springs and passed away June 10. She moved to L.A. as a young child. After her marriage to James Robbins they resided in Santa Barbara for some years before settling in Long Beach. During the war while working as head cashier at Desmond's, she volunteered for the Red Cross driving a vehicle during blackouts. In 1950 she and her husband moved to Bixby Knolls where her son, Roy, was born and where she continued living until the time of her death. After losing her husband in 1952 she was thrust into the responsibility of becoming the breadwinner for her son and mother. Though life brought her many challenges, she was always able to rise to the occasion. Her love of people was always evident and people responded in kind. Thelma liked to champion the underdog starting the first chapter of PFLAG in Long Beach. As one of the founding members of L.B. Lambda Democratic Club she spent tireless hours lobbying elected officials at all levels. Her request was simple, "treat my child with the same respect that you would want me to treat yours." She ended up becoming a surrogate mother for many whose parents had rejected them. In her later years one of her pleasures was travel. She especially liked cruising and loved spending time in Palm Springs. She is survived by her son, Roy and niece, Earleen Sharr-Norris. In lieu of flowers or donations, call someone you haven't spoken to in a while and brighten their day. Funeral service will be on Saturday, June 30 at 11am at McKenzie Mortuary, 3843 E. Anaheim St, Long Beach followed by a celebration at her home. Please sign the guestbook
