Keith Krueger Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 6, 2011.
Keith Vernon Krueger, M.D Dr. Keith Vernon Krueger died peacefully at age 87 in Long Beach, California on February 15, 2011, after a six-week hospitalization for lung cancer. He will be greatly missed by his two devoted children, Steven K. Krueger and Carolyn P. Krueger, and their spouses, Mary Ann Jenkins and David Yohe. His loving wife of 63 years, Janet Sheedy Krueger, died in 2007. Dr. Krueger was a dedicated and highly-respected pediatrician in Long Beach for 38 years. He was on the staff of the Harriman Jones Medical Clinic/Group from 1954-1992, saw patients at Memorial, St. Mary's, Community, and Miller Children's Hospitals, and was a participating pediatrician at the Long Beach Children's Clinic for 26 years. Born February 12, 1924 in Elm Creek, Nebraska to Sherman Krueger and Helen Hanneman, Dr. Krueger was raised by his grandmother in Kearney, Nebraska from age five. As a boy he held down a paper route, enjoyed outdoor adventures and reading, and earned the rank of Eagle Scout. At age 15 he moved to Wenatchee, Washington where he received statewide honors in high school debate. In 1941 he entered the University of Washington on scholarship as a pre-law student but, after joining the Army at the start of World War II, was sent to study engineering at Lehigh University, and then pre-med at Johns Hopkins University. He received his M.D. degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine in 1949, graduating first in his class. After completing his internship at King County Hospital in Seattle, he served in Korea as a Captain in the United States Army Medical Corps. Following his pediatric residency at Harbor General Hospital in Torrance, Dr. and Mrs. Krueger settled in Long Beach. An avid outdoorsman, Dr. Krueger and his family enjoyed vacations exploring California's coastline and national parks. Among his favorite pastimes were fly-fishing, butterfly collecting, birding, astronomy, gardening, and reading on a great variety of literary and historical topics. His kind, compassionate, and generous nature, sense of humor, and resolute spirit made him a most beloved and admired husband and father; one whose life has been an inspiration to many. A public memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 19, 2011, at 3 pm in the Church of Our Fathers at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, 4471 Lincoln Ave., Cypress, CA 90630. The best pediatrician ever! Such a loss to all children and their parents. They don't make doctors like him anymore. I will never forget him.

Dr Krueger was the greatest. He was my pediatrician for all of my youth and I will never forget his kind demeanor and his uplifting smile. Anyone who had the pleasure of knowing him is better for it. God bless you sir and thanks for being the best.

To all the folks who have recently shared thoughts about my father in this guest book I send a warm thank-you. I just now viewed entries from 2014 to 2016. I had not received any notice of new entries as expected, but a friend let me know. It means so very much to me and my brother to know that Dr. Krueger's patients remember him so fondly.

Dear family, my husband Harold Scott and I, Kathy Scott, have 4 children who presently range in age from 31 to 41.Dr.Kruger was their pediatrician, thank goodness. He was attentive to detail and he watched over them with the greatest of love.I have thought of him often over the years. Our family was very fortunate to have been under his care. I am so glad that he lived to the ripe old age of 87. I know he would have enjoyed knowing that both of our son's became Eagle Scouts as well. I will say prayers for him and his family. He was a wonderful Doctor and person.

I know this condolences is 5 years later but I hope that his children may read this ! My mom was Raylene who was his nurse at Harriman Jones along with Mac for many years - both at the office on Cherry and Broadway with dr DeGeorge and when they all moved to the office on Willow ! He was also the pediatrician for myself and 3 siblings ! I have fond memories of the office on Cherry - the lobby with the fireplace , the ramps that were the hallways , the pharmacy with the soda fountain ! Of course the fish tank and we always looked to find our pictures on the wall !
Dr. Krueger wrote a letter of recommendation for me to enter nursing school and after graduating , I worked at Miller children's hospital where I worked in the NICU and still do 36 years later. I loved running into him in the nursery and I would see him on Friday mornings at the Pediatric Grand Rounds !
He was a wonderful Doctor - well respected and a very kind man .
I have such fond memories of him and am grateful for having known him !

I often think of Dr. Krueger. My Mother and I were talking about him this evening an decided to look him up. We were sad to hear of his passing. He holds a special place in our hearts. He was my Dr. from birth(1956)as well as my two sisters until high school. Then he attended my four children from their births until high school. I was blessed with a Down Syndrome daughter whom he treated with special care. So many wonderful memories of visits with him and his encouraging ways. His smile and kind eyes let me know all would be well. Two generations of children watching the fish in his great aquarium and looking forward to the ice cream prescription to hand to Gracie at Harriman Jones Pharmacy. He was a truly great man and am sure he is receiving his many rewards in heaven today! God bless you and your family.

I will always remember Dr. Krueger's patient and kind ways. He was the only pediatrician that my brother Mark and I knew (we are now 61 and 58). I know he helped our parents deal with our childhood illnesses, scrapes and problems with ease, and put their minds at rest. I will always remember sitting in the examination room, waiting for Dr. Krueger to come in. It was a game to listen for his slow and steady "big feet" steps. We loved the aquarium in the waiting room and the soda fountain in the pharmacy at Harriman Jones. Lots of good memories even though when we visited him we weren't always in the nest of spirits! But his capable ways, his wonderful nurse - everything - will be in my memory forever. Peace be with you as you move forward in your lives, knowing that so many people loved your father.

I thought of your father this evening and decided to look him up on the net and found this commemorative. I remember him well…he was my doctor from birth (early 1950's…along with my 3 siblings) until I moved on to college. I remember his kind office manner and great smile along with the very professional head nurse who seemed to run the place. I once ran into Dr Kruger along with his wife and daughter in Santa Barbara while on my way to Cal Poly. I mention this because it is still a very vivid and fond memory. I wanted to share my many great memories with you and I wish I could have attended your memorial. I am sure he is dearly missed by your family but he will always be remembered by my family.

Carolyn and Steve,
I know this is late, but I am still thinking of the beautiful words that were said at your father's funeral. I know my dad really respected your father as a fellow pediatrician. Your parents were very loving, kind and intelligent people who meant so much to others. I hope all the wonderful memories help you through this time.

41 years ago I was a new 19 year old mother with absolutely no experience with a baby. Dr. Krueger guided me all the way. I wuld take Craig on the bus down Broadway to the Harriman Jones clinic and DR. Krueger would outline in great detail how to care for him. He was so wise and wonderful to me. Both Craig and Andrea 41 and 35, remember the ice cream perscriptions he gave them to get filled in the pharmacy. Dr. Krueger is definatly a one of a kind.

Doctor to my three sons, Dr Krueger was truly an angel to our family. His calm manner helped me as I struggled with the day-to-day realities of mothering my first baby, Russell. After that, I knew I could rely on whatever he said and I relaxed. He stitched up lacerations, dug out cactus thorns, dealth with high fevers in an even, confident way. His quick diagnosis of Russell's funny "Donald Duck" croup when he was 3 saved his life. He sent us straight to Memorial and had a doctor waiting at the ER entrance for us. He knew it wasn't croup but epiglotitis, a form of meningitiis. His swift action and 5 days in pediatric ICU has made him a family hero. He loved children's literature and always had an excellent selection of books in his office. I am so grateful to this wonderful man and physician.

Dr. Krueger was my pediatrician in the 1950s until I became 13. I had previously had a rather rough handler. His gentle spirit and kind way of touching gave me confidence in medical practioners for the rest of my life. I remember looking forward to seeing him for annual check-ups and having to be reminded to use nose drops. His manner was inviting. He was also a generous man who made charitable donations. I know he is in heaven with the good guys. My condolances to his family; earth has lost a noble and caring human being.

I would like to say Dr. Krueger was a wonderful pediatrician for my hyper son. He was a very good doctor. I would tell my sister I have a good old fashioned doctor who understood his patients and parents. He treated my son until he retired. My son is now 26 years old and we have wonderful memories of Dr. Krueger.

March 10, 2011

Dr. Krueger was our neighbor and my pediatrician for many years. I remember that whenever my dad, Tom, had a medical question or needed a second opinion, he always went to Keith because he had the ultimate respect for him. As a child, I always knew that if my dad had respect for him, he must be pretty good. As an adult, he earned my respect and appreciation. He will be greatly missed.

March 9, 2011

The Von Pelz family sends many thanks for Dr. Krueger as our daughter Erika's pediatrician from the moment she was born until he retired, she is 31 now. We remember him fondly as he truly cared for his kids and helped their parents grow up too.

Keith was our friend and neighbor for over 50 years. He was not pediatrician to our children and when I was surprised to learn that he treated his own children, Janet said,"of course he does, I wanted the best".

who was a credit to his community.

March 8, 2011

The very best pediatrician. We were so very fortunate to have him for all 4 of our children. I have too many incidences of his wonderful doctoring to write here. He always treated we nervous mothers with such respect, once saying "I always trust mothers' intuitions" - making you feel there was no such thing as a "dumb" question. I will remember him always.

We were so very fortunate to have Dr. Krueger for our sons' first few years. We both laughed in remembering taking in one of the boys with a mysterious large lump on his neck, Doc wasn't that worried, just curious, eventually it went away. When it appeared on our other son, same spot on the side of the neck, Doc told us "how very strange" and "that he had only seen this once before on another infant", that's when
it was brought to his attention the "other" infant was the identical twin of the one he was holding. Those twins are Juniors at Cal State Long Beach now. He was such a nice man, always open to dialog(such a rare thing today), extremely compassionate and a great doctor. May he rest in Peace.

March 7, 2011

After a very thorough newborn examination of my first child, Jenelle, Dr. Krueger turned to me and asked me, "So, how is she?". I was stunned that he would ask a nervous and inexperienced young mother this. He replied(as he probably did many times to other mothers), "You're the mom and spend 24 hours a day with your baby. I see her for 10 minutes. Please tell me how she's doing." What a great thing to say to young mothers as a confidence booster. I understood him and admired his knowledge, henceforth. And my daughters always enjoyed the ice cream rewards! Debbie Yturralde

Both our children were Dr. Krueger's patients . They had trouble saying any word with an R. He prescribed 4 sitz baths a day for a rash our daughter had. When I was giving her the 3rd bath of the day.She asked why and I told her that Dr. Krueger told me to do that. She said " dottie koogie pitty nice". He was always so nice to the children and their parents. Another time he was able to remove a large round piece of hard candy that was lodged in her windpipe. We remember him with
mush love and thanks for taking such good care of our children. Emily and Marvin Haney

My wife, Linda & I send our sympathy to the Krueger family. My dad, William Keenan MD was a partner with Dr Krueger at Harriman Jones for 25 years and we have many fond memories of his kind personality and warm bedside manner. My own father passed away in November - it seems we're losing all the great "old school" doctors from the Harriman Jones heydays. Dr Krueger touched a lot of lives and I know his memory will live on in the patients he touched during his many years in practice.

March 7, 2011

My sincere condolences to the Krueger family. Dr. Krueger cared for my children from from 1956 until 1980 and was always thoughtful and compassionate. I can't imagine a better pediatrician.

I worked at Harriman Jones in the insurance dept in the early 1970's and got to know him. When our girls were born (they are now 34 and 36 years) he was the only pediatrician my husband and I would consider. He took good care of our girls from birth until mid teens. We remember one occasion right before Christmas and our 1 year old was very sick with a fever and dehydration. He came out in the thickest fog I had ever seen at night and met us at Community Hosp. He wanted to hospitalize her at the time and we asked if we could get plenty of liquids in her overnight could we take her home. He relented and saw her 1st thing in the morning. She had improved greatly. We will never forget his sacrifice of his evening to help our little 1 year old.
We think back on those days with fond memories of Dr. Krueger and his care of our girls.

Dad's great smile.

Dr. Krueger provided medical care to our three children. He was an excellent physician and a gentleman. Within the past year, we had several very pleasant conversations, mostly about books, with him when we encountered him at Border's, Kinko's, the post office, and other Los Altos locations. You will be missed. I wish my children could have had the kind of doctor I did. You touched so many lives.

Lynn Hermstad

March 6, 2011

The Hermstad family send heartfelt condolences on the passing of Dr. Krueger to all of his family members. Dr. Krueger was our childrens' pediatrician for all of their childhood years. He was unfailing caring and always went the extra mile for his patients. When our son was down with pneumonia - he was seven - he couldn't take penicillin and had to be hospitalized. Dr. Krueger was always there monitoring his condition and he, ultimately, put together the program that turned our son's life-threatening condition around. Our children are now 45 and 43 and we attribute their good health, in part, to the wonderful attention they received as kids to Dr. Krueger. May he rest in peace and your family be consoled by the many kind words from his former patients. Fondly, The Tom Hermstad Family

Dr. Krueger was the only pediatrician my now 36 & 39 year old sons knew. I appreciated his no-nonsense approach, and always had a great amount of respect for, and a little fear of, Dr. Krueger. I had the pleasure of seeing him on a couple of occasions at Pavilions, and enjoyed our brief conversations; I think he did as well. I am truly saddened by his passing...
