John Joseph Portner, age 50, from Long Beach, CA, passed away in his sleep on July 16, 2014. John, the seventh son of Eugene and Kay Portner, leaves seven brothers, three sisters, and two grown children. He graduated from St. Anthony High School and attended CSULB. John worked for 34 years as an executive in the software industry. He started with Lacerte Software, at age 16, as the lone programmer and retired as head of a department he developed. John lived for 10 years in Dallas, Texas, residing also in Newport Beach, California. John enjoyed all active sports, especially snow skiing in his beloved Vail, Colorado. John committed himself to bringing joy to others. As a friend said, "When I saw John, I always had the feeling- John is here! This is going to be fun." John is survived by his son, Matthew; daughter Sara; his brothers and sisters Mike, Chris, Paul, Mark, Mary, Jeanne, Katie, David, Jim, and Jeff; his father, Eugene; his mother, Kay, as well as Marley his devoted dog who never left his side. John leaves behind, also, the mother of his children, Kim DeJardin Portner, and his much loved nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, and scores of friends.
John was so proud of his son and daughter, and his large extended family. His ready smile, hearty laughs, and bear hugs will be sorely missed. Services are scheduled at St. Matthew's Catholic Church (7th and Temple) on Friday, July 25, at 11:00 am, to be followed by a reception at his parents' home in Carroll Park.
