Francis passed away peacefully at his home in San Bernardino after a courageous battle with cancer, and Elvena, his loving wife of 55 years, died on April 6, 2012, her death caused by pneumonia.

Elvena attended Pella State College and received her BA degree, then continued to Pella earning her MA degree. Francis' teaching career began in small communities in Iowa, and moved on to San Bernardino in 1963 where he taught science, math, industrial arts and Driver Education, totaling 39 years in teaching.
