ROCO, Jose Antonio
Roco, Jose Antonio, passed away on February 7, 2013, one day shy of his 87th birthday, at his home in South Pasadena, his two children and his daughter-in-law by his side during his final breath.
The Funeral Mass will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church, 1501 Fremont Avenue, South Pasadena, on Friday, February 15th. A viewing will take place at 9:30am, followed by the Funeral Mass beginning at 10:00am. A reception will follow at the St. Joseph's center across the street immediately after the ceremony.
Jose was born on February 8, 1926 in the San Juan section of Manila in the Philippines, and became the first of many in his family to graduate from De La Salle high school. He went on to receive a bachelor's degree in architecture from the University of the Philippines and in the mid 1950's, he emigrated to America, arriving in San Francisco by boat and soon thereafter becoming a naturalized United States citizen.
In 1965 he married Margaret "Peggy" Roco at the Mission of San Gabriel, California where, in a cemetery niche, his cremated remains will be interred alongside hers. They were married for 44 years prior to her premature passing in 2009.
He worked as an architect for several companies, among them The Arroyo Group and Parsons where a position included being the chief architect for the Jeddah International airport in Saudi Arabia. A passionate vocalist and performer he was once in plays of the Shakespeare League, the Holy Family choir, and also sang for many special occasions, including the wedding of his son and daughter-in-law. Among the many things he enjoyed were travel, movies, playing bridge and making leche flan.
Jose is survived by his two children, Michelle Margaret Roco and Joseph John (Theresa Anita) Roco; his only granddaughter Catherine Joan; and too many nieces and nephews to list by name.
Jose is preceded in death by his wife Peggy, parents Rosario and Ramon Roco, and all of his six sisters: Dory, Medy, Gloria, Tessie, Josephine, and Carmen.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent in his name to the Shrine of St. Jude, 512 W. Saratoga St., Baltimore, MD 21201
