Richard Carl Herbst
Richard Carl "Dick" Herbst was born on April 11, 1923 in Igersheim, Germany, the only child of Adam Johann and Katherina Margaret Herbst. The family immigrated to the United States arriving at Ellis Island, New York, in January, 1924. He passed into eternal life on February 16, 2013 in Redlands at the age of 89 after suffering heart failure.
Richard grew up in Los Angeles and graduated from Verdugo Hills High School in 1940. His first job was with Texaco. When World War II broke out, he enlisted in the U. S. Army Air Corps and was assigned to the 8th Air Force, 55th Fighter Group in England. As part of the "Greatest Generation", he flew 58 combat missions as a P-51 pilot over Germany.
Upon returning to civilian life, Richard returned to Texaco for a 27-year career in sales. He then entered the financial services industry as a stockbroker, first for Dean Witter, and then as a founding partner of Great American Securities in San Bernardino. He assisted many people with their retirement planning and that career also lasted for 27 years.
Richard met Ruth Lorene Feldt while in the Air Corps and they were married in October, 1945. He is survived by his beloved wife "Rene", their children Rich Herbst (Susie), Nancy Christensen (Lance), Heidi Carter (Andy), and John Herbst (Michelle), ten grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. His interests included reading, travelling, and making stained glass windows. But his passion was his family who will forever be grateful for the memories of the many family trips together to destinations in Europe and the U.S.
During his business career Richard was active in the San Bernardino Uptown Lion's Club and he was a founding member of the Serra Club of San Bernardino. Richard was a faithful and devout Roman Catholic and was a member of St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Parish in Yucaipa for over 30 years. Services are scheduled at St. Frances for Tuesday, February 26, with viewing at 9:00 am followed by a Mass of Resurrection at 10:00 am. Burial will be at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Cemetery in Colton at 3:00 pm.
