E.B. "Shaya" Gendel

E.B. "Shaya," Gendel died in a fatal car accident January 4 in Long Beach, Calif. Born Eugene Bernard Gendel on February 27, 1948 in Hartford, CT, E.B. taught economics at Woodbury University in Burbank and was a leader of progressive causes in Long Beach, where he had lived since 1985. The founder of the local chapter of Occupy Wall Street, E.B. had recently filed to run for mayor of Long Beach. He was also active in IKAR, a progressive Jewish community based in West Los Angeles, spearheading or taking part in many social action and environmental projects. E.B. was raised in Manchester and West Hartford, CT , earning a bachelor's degree from the University of Connecticut and a doctorate in economics from Boston University. He originally moved west to assume the directorship of the California Museum of Science and Industry's Mark Taper Hall of Economics. E.B. is survived by daughters Mara and Miriam; son Jacob; former wife Sande Gendel; mother Esther Gendel; and brothers Stephen and Morgan. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, 1 p.m. at Hillside Memorial Park, 6001 West Centinela Avenue, Los Angeles.
