Obituaries from the Past Week

Gallegos, Juana - Las Cruces
Juana Soto Silva Gallegos, 85, born Dec. 26, 1929, in Troncones, Durango, Mexico, to Concepcion Soto and Acsencion Silva. She was baptized in Nasas, Durango, Mexico, and had resided in Torreon and Benito Juarez, Mexico. On Feb. 28, 1963, she was admitted into the United States and resided in Mesilla and Las Cruces, New Mexico, until her death on Jan. 16, 2015. Orphaned at a very young age, Juana learned to adjust and live life in all circumstances. In the mid-1960s, she worked in California as a sharecropper, returning to New Mexico to raise Beatrice. She took up house cleaning and anything else she could get. In 1975, she took on the role of caring for her son, Lazaro, who had been partially paralyzed by a drunken driver, caring for him for 26 years. Juana did this without ever owning a vehicle and walked everywhere. She was elated when the city buses became a part of Las Cruces. Juana was a member of the Salvation Army Church for many years. On Nov. 12, 1978, through repentance and faith in Jesus Christ, she was baptized in obedience to our Lord's command at Primera Iglesia Bautista, along with her son Lazaro. In her later years, she attended Sierra Vista Community Church, Iglesia de Dios Pentecostal and First Evangelical Free Church. She was a prayer warrior, always willing and ready to pray with anyone. Juana was definitely an amazing warrior in her last years of life. She had two major strokes and had many mini strokes. But she never let go of her faith and love for God. Juana leaves a legacy of keeping Jesus in her heart. Two things she always said, "THANK YOU JESUS" and when more was needed, "OH LORD, THANK YOU JESUS." Those left to mourn her passing include her sister, Vicenta Hernandez; daughters, Maria Elena Thomas (Steve) and Beatrice Gutierrez; grandchildren, Melinda Lujan Severns (Tim), Rocky Lujan, Joan Marie Lujan, and David Gallegos; great-grandchildren, Hannah and Elijah Severns; nephews, Frank Hernandez (Nichole), Ruben Hernandez (Yolanda); nieces, Eva Hernandez (David), Norma Noel (James); great nieces and nephews, Liz Perez, Dana Hernandez, Trevor and Cory Noel, and Frankie Hernandez. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Jose Soto Silva and Roman Villa; sisters, Amelia Villa; the love of her life, Pete Gellsomino; daughter, Baby Gallegos; son Lazaro Hernandez; niece, Donna Hernandez; brother-in-law, Ramon Hernandez and husband, Genovevo Gallegos. A service will be held Sunday, Jan. 25, 2015, at 2 p.m. in the First Evangelical Free Church, 1435 S. Pecos Street. Inurnment of cremains will be held at a later date. The family would like to thank all who helped her out in her time of need. God knows who you are and we are truly grateful. If you would like to give a donation, she would desire for you to take someone out to eat who can't afford it or buy them food for their pantry. Entrusted to Baca's Funeral Chapels of Las Cruces. 527-2222 Your exclusive providers for "Veterans and Family Memorial Care." For online condolences logon to www.bacasfuneralchapelslascruces.com.
