Bernadina Cano

Bernadina "Nina" Evaro Cano, 84, of La Mesa entered eternal life Friday, July 11, 2014 surrounded by her immediate and extended family and friends at Memorial Medical Center. She was born May 20, 1930 in Barstow, Texas to Alberto and Hilaria (Gonzales) Evaro. Nina, as she was fondly known, retired from New Mexico State University as a Nutritional Aid and was a member of the Roman Catholic Church. Nina's passion in life, after retiring and raising her children was spending time traveling to visit her children, grand children, and great-grandchildren. Nina had 17 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Nina treasured and lived for meeting and making new friends, always "adopting" children wherever she went. Nina was devoted to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Ladies Auxiliary, where she served as the vice-president of the Anthony post. Survivors include seven children, Margaret Roybal (Ramon, deceased) of Dallas, TX, Beatrice Chavarria (Benny) of Omaha, NE, Jaime (Evelyn) of Columbus, OH, Michael (Valerie) of Dona Ana, Joel (Nancy) of Las Cruces, Robert (Angela) of Las Cruces, and Bernadine "Bernie" (David) of Grand Junction, CO. Nina is survived by two brothers Albert (Matilda) of Las Cruces, and Rudolfo (Margaret) of La Mesa. In addition, Nina is survived by six sisters, Damacia (Lalo, deceased), Sara (Pete, deceased) both from La Mesa, Frances (Lalo), Mary (Juanito), both of Las Cruces, and Kila (George) from El Paso. Nina was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Manuel, her parents, and three brothers, Juan (Ester), Nicholas (Dolores), and Manuel (Estella), and one sister Isabel Goodwin (Cliff, deceased). Per Nina's request, cremation will take place and a Memorial Mass will be held on Tuesday, July 15, 2014, at San Jose Catholic Church in La Mesa at 10:00 AM.
