Bernice Florez

It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt and friend, Bernice Torres Florez, 55, of Mesilla, on Thursday, Oct. 24, 2013 at Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque. She was born June 8, 1958 in Taos to Fermin and Irene Marquez Torres. Bernice was an elementary school teacher at Mesilla Elementary and Holy Cross Catholic School. She was a very devoted and active member of the Roman Catholic Church, where she served as a Eucharistic Minister and Catechist at the Basilica of San Albino and Immaculate Heart of Mary Cathedral. Those left to mourn her passing include her loving husband of 25 years, Gary Florez, of the family home; a son, Steven Florez; a daughter, Brittnee Florez, all of Mesilla; her parents of Taos; four brothers, Larry Torres, Rey Torres (Georgia), all of Taos, Andy Torres (Cecilia), of Penasco, Patrick Torres (Eileen), of El Rancho; two sisters, Lucille Briseno (Lonnie), and Frances Padilla (Jerry) all of Las Cruces. Other survivors include her parents-in-law, Abel and Armida Florez, brother-in-law, Daniel Florez, and sister-in-law, Laura Florez, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts and cousins. Bernice was preceded in death by her brother, Filmer (Phil) Torres, a brother-in-law, Steve Florez, grandparents, and numerous relatives. Visitation for Bernice will begin at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 28, 2013 in Immaculate Heart of Mary Cathedral, 1240 S. Espina Street where the Prayer Vigil is scheduled for 7 p.m. Family and friends will join together to celebrate The Holy Mass of Resurrection at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2013 in the same church with the Rev. Fr. Miguel Briseño, OFM Conv. and concelebrant will be Rev. Richard Catanach, Vicar General. The Rite of Committal and Interment will follow in Masonic Cemetery, 760 S. Compress Road where she will be laid to rest in the family plot. Serving as casket bearers will be Rey, Andy and Patrick Torres, Daniel Florez, Phillip Padilla, Cory Gillespie, Christopher Florez and Diego Briseno.
