Connie Chavez

It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. On Feb. 19, 2014, surrounded by her loving family, she took hold of the Lord's hand. Connie V. Chavez was born March 22, 1935, to Andres and Pascuala Villegas of Dona Ana, N.M. As a teen she worked on the farm in Hill, N.M., the family moved to Dona Ana, and then later to Las Cruces, where she met her beloved husband, Pete V. Chavez, and was married on Jan. 4, 1957. She worked in sales starting with Mott's, Gibsons, and retiring from InstaCopy. Connie enjoyed sports, her favorite football teams were the Dallas Cowboys and Notre Dame, and her favorite baseball team was the Dodgers. She enjoyed reading and her Novelas, but most of all enjoyed being with her family. Those left to mourn her passing are her daughters, Elizabeth Gamboa (Gilbert), Patty Martinez (Steve), and Pauline Chavez (Joe Sauceda), all of Las Cruces. She is also survived by grandchildren Inez Hinojos (Emilia), Greg Martinez (Aneva), Peter Martinez (Victoria), Monica Dominguez (Dee), Andy Hinojos (Liz), Beaver Gamboa (Debbie), Tina Gamboa and Maria Elena Gamboa; 17 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren, all of Las Cruces. Sisters Juanita Costales, Lydia Holguin, and brother Marcos Villegas. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Pete V. Chavez; her parents, Andres and Pascuala Villegas; brothers, Samuel, Felix and Joe Villegas; and sister Andrea Rodriquez. Visitation will be held today, Feb. 25, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Primera Iglesia Bautista, 905 S. Chaparro, with church services to follow at noon officiated by Pastor James Underwood. Burial to follow at Hillcrest Memorial Garden. Pallbearers: Greg Martinez, Peter Martinez, Andres Hinojos, Steve Martinez, Robert Rodriquez, Jessie Villegas. Services are entrusted to La Paz-Grahams Funeral Home.
