David Beatson

David J. Beatson of Las Cruces passed away peacefully on March 16, 2013 at the Mesilla Valley Hospice-La Posada after a recent illness. He was diagnosed with a lung mass in mid-November, but was able to remain at home until the past 10 days of his life. He spent his final days surrounded by his family and friends at the hospice facility. David was born on March 31, 1925, in Akron, Ohio. He served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific during World War II. Following his discharge, he married Bette Lou Nopper in Toledo, Ohio. They were happily married for more than 55 years until her death in 2002. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Toledo (OH) and later his master's degree from the University of Michigan. He spent his career as an educator, first as a teacher and then a principal and administrator. His educational love was for teaching and his students. He raised his family and spent his professional career in Michigan and Ohio, before retiring to Las Cruces in 1988. He loved cars and driving, and in "retirement" spent 10 years selling automobiles in Las Cruces. After his second "retirement" at age 75, he spent 10 years as a volunteer for Mesilla Valley Hospice where he continued to share his passion for teaching and caring about others. He touched many people and made many friends in this capacity. He was a wonderful and loving father to his two sons, David and Daniel, and daughter, Cheryl. He was also loved his two grandchildren, Brandon and Brian Beatson. A kind and gentle person, he spent most of his life in giving back to others. From a loyal sailor during World War II, to a dedicated teacher, a devoted father and husband, and a hospice volunteer, he touched many people with his kindness. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Elizabeth Urquhart Beatson; brother Ian, who was killed in France in World War II; and four sisters, Elizabeth (Craig) Beatson, Anne "Bunty" (Schuller) Beatson, Nellie (Smith) Beatson, and Marge (Schies) Beatson. He is survived by son David (Diana) Beatson of Hillsborough, Calif.; son Daniel (Mary Ellen) of Pomona, Calif.; daughter Cheryl of Las Cruces; his two grandsons and 10 nieces and nephews. The family is planning a memorial service at the Chapel at the La Posada Facility of the Mesilla Valley Hospice (299 Montana Ave., Las Cruces) at 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 30, 2013. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to the MV Hospice in his honor.
