Diego Montoya

Diego T. Montoya, 84, went to be with our Lord and family and friends that have gone before us on Feb. 9, 2013. After a short time of dealing with dementia and Parkinson's disease, he left us peacefully. Diego was born in Monticello, N.M. and was a lifelong resident of Elephant Butte and Truth or Consequences, N.M. He was well-known in the community, especially for his pleasant smile and friendliness. Diego was always helping someone and just wanted to be of service to others. He was preceded in death by his parents, Merced and Emma Montoya; his brother, Daniel Montoya and his son, Larry Montoya. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Lily Montoya; son, Gary (Carla) Montoya of Truth or Consequences; daughter, Kerry Ann (Russell) Wallace of Las Cruces; daughter-in-law, Jennie Montoya of Long Beach, Calif.; brother, Merced (Esther) Montoya of Scottsdale, Ariz.; sisters, Lisa Greer and Dolores Bishop of Truth or Consequences; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He served in the New Mexico National Guard for 22 years and retired as a major and also worked for 30 years with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation at Elephant Butte Dam as a power plant operator and supervisor. Diego was very involved with the Knights of Columbus - Fr. John W. Miles Council #8281 and St. Michael the Archangel Assembly #3330 as a 4th Degree Knight and served as chapter president for NARFE Sierra County Chapter #1341 for a number of years. He loved his family, friends and church as well as hunting and driving around exploring. Viewing for family and friends will be Feb. 15, 2013 in the Chapel of Kirikos Family Funeral Home from 2 – 4 p.m. A prayer vigil will be held later that evening at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church evening at 7 p.m. A rite of resurrection will be celebrated on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013 at 10 a.m. followed by cremation. Private family interment will be held at a later date. Serving as casket bearers are Jed Bowers, Justin Bowers, Matthew Montoya, Patrick Montoya, Chris Lohrengel and Shane Nalen. Honorary casket bearers will be the McDonald's Coffee Crew consisting of Placido Garcia, Harv Kleinstiver, Ivan Padilla, Phil Woolford, Don Brown, Oliver Bryant, Doyle Trout, Leroy Pacheco, Fred Johnson and Eloy Valdez.
