Elaine Carrasco-Jewell

Elaine Marcela (Mars) Carrasco-Jewell, 46, passed away after a long illness on May 2, 2013 in Los Angeles, Calif. Marcela was born Sept. 20, 1966 in San Gabriel, Calif. and raised in La Mesa, N.M. where she attended Gadsden High School and was a cheerleader all four years. She was an accomplished hair dresser and internationally recognized platform performer while acting as director of education for Tri Hair Products. Marcela enjoyed photography and dedicated countless hours to Mitzi Bond PTA and San Jose Catholic Church in La Mesa. Her greatest achievement in life was her daughter, Hailey. Hailey was Mars' inspiration and the fuel that kept her going for so many years as her body began to fail. Mars was an amazing person who never met a stranger and was a friend to all who knew her. She was selfless to a fault and shared all that she had, even when she had nothing. She was funny, fearless, confident and compassionate. She will be missed by many and forgotten by none. Mars was preceded in death by her father, Pedro Carrasco. She is survived by her daughter Hailey Lane Jewell; mother Sara Evaro Carrasco; siblings, Elizabeth Tupelu, Pete Carrasco and wife Letty, Ella Carrasco Dixon and husband Joel, Chris Carrasco and wife Mary, Luis Carrasco and wife Stacy as well as numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and loving friends. Rosary will be held Friday, May 24, 2013 at 7 p.m. in St. Matthew's Catholic Church, 400 W. Sunset Road in El Paso, Texas. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 25, 2013 in San Jose Catholic Church, 353 Josephine St. in La Mesa with Father Martin Cordero officiating both services. In lieu of flowers, a college scholarship fund has been created for Hailey Jewell. Checks can be made out to Ella Dixon - Hailey Jewell Scholarship: 17918 Doty Ave., Torrance, CA 90504. In honor of Mars, the family strongly encourages her extended family, friends and colleagues to become part of the National Marrow Donor Program at www.marrow.org and to also consider donating blood or platelets.
