Harry Leon Benjamin, 67, of Silver City, N.M., passed away at his residence Thursday, May 2,2013. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Bright Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at Bright Funeral Home Chapel on Tuesday, May 7, 2013, at 11 a.m. Harry was born Sept. 5, 1945, in Silver City to Richard A. and Etchel Maurine Burchfield Benjamin. He is survived by his mother, one brother Tommy (Gina) Benjamin and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father and a brother Richard 'Dickie' Benjamin. Harry was a Cobre High School graduate, attended Western New Mexico University and graduated with a degree in art, then went back and taught at Cobre Consolidated Schools. He was an Army
veteran, who served in Germany. After being back in Silver City, he went to Los Angeles to continue his education in art, and also received an arts award from the governor's office. Harry was the original curator of the Silver City Museum. He went to San Antonio, Texas, and walked the river walk. This gave him the idea to form a committee to design the Big Ditch.
