Hector Vela

Today we celebrate the life of Hector R. Vela, beloved husband and father. Hector, originally from Omaha, NE and retired in Las Cruces, NM, passed away on 18 February, 2014. Hector is preceded in death by his parents, 7 brothers and sisters, and his son, Gregory. Hector served in the Navy during the Korean War. Returning home after his honorable service in the Navy ended, Hector married Betty Kudym of Omaha, They settled in South Omaha where they began their family. Hector is survived by wife Betty, son Rick (and Karen) Vela of Gretna, NE, son John Vela of La Vista, NE, daughter Maria Vela Casillas of Greeley, CO, son Joe Vela of Snead's Ferry, NC, plus 11 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Hector is also survived by two sisters: Carmen Longoria of Lincoln, NE and Delores (Tony) Rodriquez of Clermont, FL. Hector had an illustrious 35 year career as an Omaha barber. His barber shop was a South Omaha icon for many years as he served generations of South Omaha families. He was also involved with the local American Legion post, a proud charter member of the Our Lady of Guadalupe's Knights of Columbus and is also a Benedictine Oblate of Concepcion Abbey in Concepcion, MO. Memorial Mass will be held Wednesday in Omaha, NE at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church Memorial donations may be sent to either: Munson Senior Center, 975 S. Mesquite Street, Las Cruces, NM 88001, Mesilla Valley Hospice, 299 Montana Avenue, Las Cruces, NM 88005. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated in his memory and in celebration of his life on Thursday March 6th at 12:10 p.m. at Holy Cross Church, 1327 N. Miranda St, Las Cruces.
