Jackie Ball

Jackie Stubblefield Ball passed away on Tuesday, April 15, 2014. Jackie was born in Mineral Wells, TX on June 23, 1919, one of seven children. During her early childhood, the "Dust Bowl" conditions forced the family to move to a farm in the valley east of Old Mesilla. Soon after, the family moved again to a farm in Canutillo, TX. After graduating from El Paso High School, she attended the Texas College of Mines (UTEP) where she earned a degree in English. Jackie married the late Russell E. Ball, who was a manager for Chevron and a nationally ranked tennis player. They raised three children and developed in each of them the love of tennis. The Ball family was named USTA Family of the year in 1989. Over the next forty years, Russell's career required frequent moves. The family lived in Albuquerque NM, Lubbock TX, Salt Lake City UT and Pocatello ID. In each town, Jackie taught school, mostly elementary, but in Pocatello she accepted a position to teach speech at Idaho State University. Russell and Jackie retired and moved back to El Paso where they concentrated on enjoying life and their close circle of friends and tennis buddies. Jackie was a wonderful hostess whose Mexican dinners were always in demand. They shared many a day playing tennis and golf. They also traveled extensively to see their children and grandchildren. In 1990, Russell passed away and in 2009 Jackie moved to Seattle, WA to be with her daughter, Beverly. Recently she moved back to La Cruces, where her son Don lives. Jackie is survived by her brother, Douglas Stubblefield of Tularosa NM; her sons, J. Russell Ball (Mary) of St. Petersburg FL and Don Ball (Denise) of Las Cruces NM; and her daughter, Beverly Henderson (Kent) of Seattle WA; seven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. Jackie requested a private family burial. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made in memory of Jackie to Mesilla Valley Hospice, 299 E. Montana Avenue, Las Cruces, NM 88005 (575) 523-4700. Service arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Baca's Funeral Chapels of Las Cruces and Sunset Crematory, 300 E.
