Joseph McCarty

Rapid City/Joseph P. McCarty, 86, died Friday, Aug. 8, 2014, at Rapid City Regional Hospital Hospice of the Hills. Joe McCarty was born in El Paso, Texas, on July 29, 1928. He was a veteran of WWII, Korean War and Vietnam War. He married Tommie Simmons on June 9, 1948. Joe and Tommie were stationed in France, Morocco, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and South Dakota. Joe retired as MSGT from the US Air Force and pursued a career in sales.

Joe was a member of the Masonic Order, Order of Eastern Star, Scottish Rite, York Rite and the Order of the Red Cross of Constantine. He was a member of the NAJA Shrine and a Clown Emeritus. In addition, Joe was a member of the VFW and the USPS Customer Advisory Council.

Joe was preceded in death by his loving wife, Tommie, of 63 years. He is survived by his children, Ginger Henry (Jim) of Sun Lakes, Arizona, Joe "Britt" McCarty (Peggy) of Glendo, Wyoming, Bart McCarty (Becky) of Cherokee, Texas, Shannon Konst (Bill) of Rapid City, South Dakota, Linda Anderson (Tony) of Fisher, Minnesota, and Alpha Beesley (Chris) of Box Elder, South Dakota, 12 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; Billie Jo Turnbow, sister-in-law; G.W. Simmons (Laona), brother-in-law; and niece, Patsy Jo Gillis (Bobby).

Memorial services are set for 11am Friday, Aug. 15, at Canyon Lake United Methodist Church in Rapid City, with the Rev. Eric Grinager officiating. Inurnment will be at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, South Dakota, with full military honors. Memorial requests are to the Naja Shrine Hospital Transportation Fund. Kirk Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
