Mary Evelyn Brown, 92, passed away March 12, 2013, in Las Cruces surrounded by her family. She was born Jan. 1, 1921, in Roswell, N.M., to Mr. and Mrs. C.H. Walcott. She grew up in Vega, Texas, and graduated from Vega High School where she played basketball. Her family moved to Alamogordo, N.M., just before World War II, where she met and married O'Dell Brown in 1945. She is preceded in death by her parents and husband, as well as five brothers and one sister. Mary worked at Rolland Drug, Hospital Pharmacy and Brunnell's Clothing in Alamogordo for many years, but her passion was creating things with her hands. She loved pottery and crafts and shared many of her talents with her family. Cooking was her ultimate joy. You never visited her home that she didn't offer you something to eat. She especially loved baking. Known later in life as Bumbie, thanks to her grandchildren, she invested many hours in advance of the holidays making cookies and candies that she delivered to family and friends all over town. She is survived by her two children, Vincent Brown and his wife Alice of Las Cruces and Marlyn Gilbert and her husband Peter of Roswell; four grandchildren, Vince Gilbert and his wife Whitney, Kyle Gilbert, Julie Hughes and her husband Jeff, and Anthony (Tony) Brown, all of Las Cruces; a brother Bob Walcott of Albuquerque; two sisters, Gail Scroggins of Alamogordo and Patsy Whitlock and her husband Lee of Lincoln, Calif.; great-grandchildren, Sam Gilbert, Tyler Gilbert, Dylan Gilbert, Phoenix Gilbert, Alexandria (Lexie) Brown, Jillian Hughes, Donovan Brown, Sheena Gibson and Kayla Gibson and several nieces and nephews. The family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home Inc. to direct the arrangements. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., March 22, at Monte Vista Cemetery, where she will be laid to rest beside her husband. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Mary's memory be made to Mesilla Valley Hospice 299 E. Montana Avenue, Las Cruces, NM.
