Richard Millard

Richard Alan Millard, 78, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Caballo, N.M. on Dec. 30, 2012. He was born July 26, 1934 in Arizona to Joe B. and Jessie Lee (Pruett) Millard. When he was 4, the Millard family moved to Arrey, N.M. and bought some land and started farming. Richard attended and graduated from Hatch Union High School and attended McMurry College in Abilene, Texas and the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, N.M. He then went on to join the U.S. Navy and graduated from the N.A.S. Pre-Flight School in Pensacola, Fla. in 1957. While in Pensacola, he met Ouida Fay Bagley, who was attending nursing school in 1958 and moved back to Arrey to pursue the Millard family farming operation. Richard spent most of his life farming the family farm with his parents. He was a charter member of the Arrey-Derry Volunteer fire Department in the late 1960s and was still active in the fire department up to the day he passed away. He was also active in the Sierra County Humane Society/Desert Haven Animal Refuge and was a member of the Sierra County Republican Party, and active in Sierra County politics as well. He was preceded in death by his father, Joe B. Millard in 1981, his mother, Jessie Lee Millard in 1983, his first wife, Ouida Fay Bagley Millard in October 1992 and most recently, his second wife, Annie McManus Millard on Nov. 23, 2012. He is survived by his daughter, Milly Dittrich and husband, Dan of Santa Clara, Calif.; two grandchildren, Brandon and Britteny Tognazzini of Modesto, Calif. and his step-children, Ruth Hogan, Tom DeWitt and Sharold Britt and his step-grandchildren. Cremation has taken place and a memorial will be held in the Caballo/Arrey/Hatch area sometime in the spring, at a date yet to be determined.
