Robert Gallardo

Robert M. Gallardo, 71, of Bayard, entered into eternal rest on Feb. 4, 2014, at his home. He was surrounded by his loving family and friends. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014, at Baca's Funeral Chapels. The holy rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. by Deacon Bill Holguin. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 10, 2014, at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Bayard, N.M., with the Rev. Paulus Kao officiating. Concluding services and interment will follow at Fort Bayard National Cemetery with full military honors. He was born in Santa Rita on June 10, 1942, to Gavino and Margarita Gallardo. He was a lifelong resident of Grant County, a devout Catholic and parishioner of Our Lady of Fatima Parish where he attended Mass daily, as well as, volunteered for anything that was needed by the church. He instilled his love of the Catholic faith upon his children and grandchildren. Robert graduated from Cobre High School in 1961, joined the U.S. Navy in 1962, where he achieved the ranking of E4 and served on the USS Ticonderoga, until June 1966. On March 6, 1963, he married his high school sweetheart, Josie Gutierrez. They celebrated 50 years of marriage in 2013. In 1978, he graduated from Western New Mexico University with a degree in business and education. He was employed by Phelps Dodge for 30 years. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus Council #9470, Latin American Club, VFW Honor Guard, American Legion and Family Movement. Robert was a proud father, father-in-law, and grandpa. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and spending time with his family, but especially loved attending all his grandchildren's activities. He was a strong, but loving and caring person to all who knew him; always willing to listen and give advice. He is survived by his wife, Josie, son Robert (Robbie) Gallardo, his wife Melissa, daughter Debra (Debbie) Reyes, her husband Amador III, daughter Katherine (Kathy) Fletcher, her husband Steve, grandchildren Marisa and Robert Joseph Gallardo, Amador IV and Madelyn Reyes, Kristina and Steven Jacob Fletcher, his siblings David Gallardo, Delia Sepulveda (Toy), Maria Elena Galindo, and Alicia Vasquez (Ruben), sisters-in-law Carmen Rodriguez (Jesus), Lydia Arzola (Antonio), and Bertha Muniz (Felix), brother-in-law Rudy Gutierrez (Stella), numerous nieces and nephews. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, his in-laws Manuel and Maria Gutierrez, brothers-in-law Manuel Rivera, Armando Galindo, nephews David Anthony Gallardo, Paul Rodriguez, niece Ashley Nicole Vasquez, and great-nephew Vincent Ryan Gnader. Serving as pallbearers are Amador Reyes IV, Robert Joseph and Marisa Gallardo, Thomas James (TJ) Muniz, Armando and Joshua Galindo.
