Sandy Mirabal

It is with overwhelming sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sandy on March 20, 2014. Born in Paris, Ky., to Fred W. and Dorothy Mae Hadley, she was oldest of four children. She grew up in the bluegrass of Kentucky. When she was in high school, her father moved his family to Battle Creek, Mich., where she graduated from Battle Creek High in 1958. Unable to afford to go to college, she joined the U.S. Women's Army Corps and became a medical assistant. While stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, she met the love of her life, Rey Mirabal, on a blind date at Belton Lake near Killeen, Texas, in September 1959 and married on Dec. 4, 1959. She made a home for her family wherever her husband's Army career took them, whether it was in Alaska, Oklahoma or New Mexico. She truly loved southern New Mexico the most, especially the Organ Mountains. She retired from First National Bank, and not able to stay home, she started a new adventure and decided to drive a school bus for Las Cruces Public Schools. She loved all of those children and many of them she wanted to take home with her. She also was a volunteer for Big Brothers, Big Sisters. Sandra's laugh would fill a room and her big, beautiful smile was infectious. She loved a good debate and was a master at the art of rebuttal. She loved vanilla milkshakes, Coke with lots of ice, and going to Starbucks, Dillard's, Barnes and Noble, and Red Lobster! She enjoyed going to the casino, reading mystery novels, spending time with her family, and spoiling her grand and great-grandchildren. She was an exceptional cook, and felt that cooking for her family was showing how much she loved them and she REALLY loved her family! She was a devoted fan of the Dallas Cowboys and the Kentucky Wildcats. Sandra is survived by her loving husband of 54 years Reymundo, two children Deborah Moreno and husband, Frank, of Las Cruces, Reymundo Mirabal II and wife, Kyla, of Rio Rancho, N.M., brother Fred Hadley and wife, Dora, of Paris, Ky., grandchildren Carol Littleton and husband, Jackie, of Deming, N.M., Patrick Mirabal and wife Elaine of Norwalk, Ohio, Ariel and Nicholas Mirabal of Rio Rancho, N.M., Chase Stull, Kevin and Nathan Moreno of Las Cruces, and great-grandchildren Abby, Emma, Lyuda, and Veda Mirabal, Kyla Finney and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, Donna and Pam, and her beloved son Rico. At her request, cremation has taken place; a memorial Mass to honor Sandra will take place on Friday, March 28, 2014 at 10 a.m. at St. Genevieve's Church, 100 S. Espina St., Las Cruces, N.M. Care entrusted to La Paz-Graham's Funeral Home, 555 W. Amador Ave, Las Cruces, NM 88005.
