William Laney

William "Billy" Shelby Laney, 78, of Las Cruces entered eternal life on Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2013, at Sagecrest Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was born in Eager, Ariz., on May 24, 1935, to William Shelby and Edith Chappell Laney. Billy was raised in the Reserve-Cliff area and joined the military after graduating high school. He was a well-known rancher as well as a smoke jumper with the U.S. Forest Service. Survivors include his children; Christine Laney and her children, Klayton, Shelby and her son Wade, and Faryn; Tom Laney and wife, Nancy, of Las Cruces and their children, Julie and Noah; Rob Schilling and wife Sonya of Santa Fe and their children, Sydney and Mark; and Ryann Laney of Austin, Texas, and her children, London and Jaxon. Other survivors include three brothers, Fred Chappell and wife, Beverly, of Cliff, Leroy Chappell and wife, Dee, and David Laney; two sisters, Cleo Hall of Reserve and Mona Laney Klement of Silver City. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Eddie J. Laney and two sisters, Sheila McMahon and Kathy Waites. A Graveside Service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013, in the Cliff-Gila Mesa Cemetery in Gila, NM, with the Rev. David Goble officiating.
