Obituary Condolences

Don F. Owens, 85, passed away in his home surrounded by family on Dec. 12, 2013, as a result of myelodysplastic syndrome in Silver City, NM. He was born on Nov. 8, 1928, in Kansas City, MO, to his late parents Charles V. Owens and Helen Barrett Owens. He was preceded in death by his brother, Charles V. Owens, Jr. of Elkhart, IN, and a grandson, Daniel Trilli, of Cloudcroft, NM. In 1983, a son, Kenneth Owens suddenly vanished and has never been heard from since. After graduating from high school in 1946, Don joined the Army and is a World War II veteran. Don was assigned to the Signal Corp for two years, and after completing 24 weeks of schooling at Fort Monmouth, N.J., he was assigned to the Panama Canal Zone as a cryptographic technician. Don graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1952 with a degree in physical education. After a brief stint with the American Red Cross in Mansfield, OH, he met and married Edy Lou Noser in 1955. They moved to Kansas City, MO., and he started his career with Vicks Chemical Co. (makers of Vaporub). In 1961, he was a salesman in Kansas City and Overland Park, KS. He was promoted to the New York City office as a national sales manager in 1963. He served in New York for three years before returning to the field as division manager in St. Louis, MO. Don retired from Vicks in 1977. He was with Vicks for 21½ years before moving to Houston, TX, where he spent 22 years as a salesman. In 1999, he moved to Las Cruces, NM. Don volunteered for 6½ years at the C.O.R.E. agency and 6½ years at Mountain View Regional Medical Center. Don loved his volunteer jobs and was highly regarded by the staff of these agencies. He especially liked his job at the hospital because he drove the Courtesy Golf Cart, which assisted patients, and he was a trainer for other drivers while working at the hospital. In April 2013, Don decided to move to Silver City to be closer to his family. Don is survived by his son, Don J. (Jesse) Franklin-Owens and his wife, Georgeann of Arenas Valley, NM.; his daughters, Cathleen Owens and Doreen Glover, both of Silver City, NM.; granddaughters Shanti Ceane, Tierra Rose, and Miriel Manning; grandsons, Joseph Franklin-Owens, Aspen Franklin-Owens, and Jeremiah Trilli, and two great-grandchildren, Jordyn and Kodah Martinez, of Silver City, NM.
