Gabriel Galos Obituary
Gabriel (Gabby) Galos, age 98, of Las Cruces passed from this earth on Tuesday, November 5, 2013 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Gabby, as he was fondly known to family and friends, was born February 11, 1915 in Flint, Michigan; one of six children born to Hungarian immigrants. He was a 1933 graduate of Maryhurst Normal High School in Kirkwood, Missouri. In 1937 Gabby obtained a Bachelor's degree in math and physics from St. Mary's University in San Antonio, Texas, and earned a Master's degree in biophysics from St. Louis University, St. Louis, Missouri, in 1941. As a member of the United States Army from 1943 to 1946, he was involved in testing the Norden bombsight. In 1945 Gabby came to a desert camp (which later became White Sands Missile Range) to install and operate radar instruments. After his service he worked in the Chicago area teaching at Northwestern University and working in private industry. It was there he met and married the love of his life, Marie, to whom he was married for 68 years. Together they raised a family of four living children, nine grandchildren and fifteen great- grandchildren. In 1952 Gabby and Marie returned to New Mexico where he worked as a civilian employee at White Sands Missile Range until his retirement in 1977 as Chief of the Optics Division, Instrumentation Directorate. In 1985 Gabriel was elected into the White Sands Missile Range Hall of Fame. During retirement he enjoyed traveling America in his fifth wheel trailer and spending "quality time" at the cabin he built in the Gila. Gabby was active in the betterment of his community and believed "civil service" was really to serve the good of the people. To his many friends and family, Gabby was a devoted husband and father, a loyal and caring friend, and always a teacher, He would take the time to show a grandchild how to solve a school problem, learn to use a tool or how to a help someone. Those who knew him benefitted from his intelligence, compassion and appreciated his subdued sense of humor. The world will miss his presence. At his request cremation will take place and no services are scheduled at this time. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his name to Mesilla Valley Hospice, 299 E. Montana Avenue, Las Cruces. NM 88005 or CARE. The Galos Family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Baca's Funeral Chapels and Sunset Crematory, 300 E.
