Jack Henry Fortenberry, 74, of 1078A Four Forks Road, Elizabeth City, North Carolina, died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2012 at Sentara Careplex in Hampton, Virginia. A native of Santa Rita, New Mexico, he was the son of the late Jack Fortenberry and Mary Helen Baker Fortenberry, and the husband of Betsy Riddick Fortenberry. He was a retired boilermaker. Mr. Fortenberry was a decorated U.S. Army veteran and POW, having served in both the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War as an Army Ranger, receiving three purple hearts. He was a life member of the William Clarence Jackson VFW Post 6060 and a member of its Honor Guard. Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Michelle Thompson and husband, Ted, of Yorktown, Virginia, and Barbara Cartwright of Elizabeth City; three sons, Jack Fortenberry Jr. and wife, Dawn, of Hertford, North Carolina, Robert Jantz of Detroit, and Dennis Cartwright of Grandy, North Carolina; two sisters, Helen Bowen of Idaho Falls, Idaho, and Darlene Ganz of Orting, Washington; six grandchildren, Joshua Fortenberry with the USMC in Okinawa, Japan, Cameron Fortenberry and Jackie Fortenberry of Hertford, Randy Cartwright and Kevin Cartwright of Elizabeth City, and Matt Thompson of Yorktown. Twiford Funeral Home, Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, is serving the Fortenberry family. A service will be Monday, June 23, 2014 at 2 p.m. at Fort Bayard National Veterans Cemetery.
