Joe Roy Salars, 86, of Silver City passed away September 16 at his home. Mr. Salars was born Jan. 9, 1927 in Silver City. He was the youngest child of William Edward (Ves.) and Sarah (Roberts) Salars. He married Susie (Weta) McDonald Salars on August 19, 1947 in Silver City, 66 years of marriage. Mr. Salars served in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific during World War II. Upon his return, he worked in several capacities for the Forest Service in the Gila Forest and later left the area as a heavy equipment operator. In 1959, he purchased the old Roy Henry Truck Line and it evolved into Salars Excavating for over 50 years, owner of Salars Excavating in Silver City. He was member of the Silver City Elks Lodge No. 0413. He loved the outdoors; fishing, hunting, camping, picnics and enjoyed social events with family and friends. He will be remembered by all with a dog by his side, a cigar in his mouth, a great sense of humor. A good man. He is survived by his wife Susie; two daughters, Terry Anderson and her husband Dougan of Silver City, Dalena Terrgino-Potter and her husband Jim of Bandera, Texas; two sons, Robert (Bob) Salars and his wife Glenda of Silver City, Rick Salars of Phoenix, Ariz.; one daughter-in-law, Nancy Salars of Paraguay; 11 grandchildren, 16 great-grand children, one great-great and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son; Carl W. Salars and daughter; Bridgett Salars; his parents; Ves.and Sarah Salars; his brothers, Elmer, Oscar, Eddie, and Calvin; and sisters, Vernon Grimes and Elizabeth Gillespie. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in the name of Joe R Salars, at AM Bank, to be used for the Home of Hope, a long term program for young women with addictions. It has been his wish to have his granddaughter well. A memorial service with military honors will be held on Friday, September 20 at 4 p.m. at Terrazas Funeral Chapels with his son, Bob Salars officiating. Inurnment will be held Monday, September 23 at Fort Bayard National Cemtery. Cremation will take place at Terrazas Crematory.
