John Joseph Bianco Sr., of Las Cruces, New Mexico, passed away Friday, June 20, 2014, at Mesilla Valley Hospice at the age of 89. He was recently widowed by his wife, Jacqueline (Sandy) Bianco. A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Mr. Bianco was born May 17, 1925. He was a United States Navy veteran who served his country during both World War II and the Korean War. He earned numerous medals during his tenure in the Navy to include the United Nations Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. In 1964, he retired from the Navy with the rank of Chief Petty Officer E-7, after honorably serving for 20 years. After retirement from military service, Mr. Bianco served 20 years in civil service, employed as a food services supervisor with the Department of Corrections, Central Detention Facility, Washington, D.C., retiring in 1985. He moved to Las Cruces in 2004, where he always wanted to live in the desert. During his 10 years in Las Cruces, he met many new friends. Mr. Bianco enjoyed being with his family and his many friends. Some of his hobbies included reading, working on crossword puzzles, and learning how to use the computer, as well as watching his favorite football team, the Baltimore Ravens. In 2009, Mr. Bianco traveled to the nation's capitol accompanied by a group of New Mexico World War II veterans as part of the New Mexico Honors Flight and visited the World War II memorial. Mr. Bianco is survived by three daughters: Pat Bianco of Las Cruces; Ginny Bianco of Aurora, Colorado; and Frankie Bianco of Glen Burnie, Maryland; and one son and daughter-in-law: John Joseph Bianco Jr., and wife Elizabeth J. Bianco, of Spokane, Washington. He is survived by five grandchildren: Brian Lusby and wife, Krista, of Houston, Texas; Justin Lusby of Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Brittany, Michael, and John Bianco of Elizabeth, Colorado. He is also survived by two great-grandchildren: Drew and Landon Lusby of Houston. A memorial service with full military honors will be held Wednesday, June 25, 2014, at 10 a.m., at Getz Funeral Home, Las Cruces. He and his wife will be buried at sea in a naval ceremony at a later date.
