Lillie Maxine Nicholson, 75, a resident of Hurley, N.M., entered eternal rest Sunday, June 23, 2013. She was born June 20, 193,8 in Flagstaff, Ariz., to Malcolm (Big Nick) and Wilma D. Nicholson longtime residents of Hurley, N.M. She graduated from high school in 1956, valedictorian of the first graduating class from a then very new Cobre High School. Maxine went on to receive a bachelor's degree in nursing from Baylor University in Waco, Texas. a master's degree in Public Health from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her PhD from the University of Texas at Houston, Texas. Dr. Nicholson served honorably in the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps and held many positions of importance throughout her career before retiring as a capitan after twenty plus years of service and duty to her country. Maxine was a true Renaissance woman living her life her way, filled with love for her family, her friends, life and adventure. With a generous spirit and a faithful heart Maxine was a tireless pursuer of knowledge and a prolific reader who traveled the world; enjoyed art, music, cruises and spas and an occasional casino. Even in death she passed gracefully with loving family surrounding her. We will miss her terribly, our oldest sister, our matriarch, a true pillar of strength to us all. Maxine is survived by three sisters, Barbara Choate and husband Richard of Caney, Okla.; Sharleen Maese of San Antonio, Texas; Betty Marriage and husband Floyd of White Signal, N.M; She was a beloved aunt to Richard Choate Jr., Shawna Roland, Roger and Patrick Maese, Nicole Hickle, Ramona Redwine and Luke Marriage; and a loving great aunt to Alex and Sydney Rowland, Tyler Heckler, Kasie and Nic Choate, Maya and Amilia Maese, Camryn and Emily Hickle, Michael and Domenic Redwine, Emily and Joshua Riggs and Michael and Christopher Marriage. Maxine was preceded in death by her father Malcolm in '86; her mother Wilma in '98; and nephew Christopher Spangler (Kit) in '96. Per family request services will be held at a later date.
