Paul M. Chavez, age 80, went home to be with the Lord on July 1, 2013, at the New Mexico State Veterans' Home in Truth or Consequences, NM where he had lived the past 2 years. He was born April 27, 1933 in Garfield, NM, son of Lino and Cuca Chavez. He attended the Hot Springs Schools and played baseball at every opportunity. He had been in Philadelphia, PA most of his adult life after being stationed there with the U.S. Army. He remained in Pennsylvania, married and there raised their 2 children, Edna Ruth and Anthony Chavez. He remained an avid fan of the "Phillies"and the "Eagles". He had come to New Mexico to be close to his family after being diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. He is preceded in death by wife, Clara, mother and father, Lino and Cuca Chavez and sister, Margaret (Maggie) Trujillo in 2010. He will be greatly missed by his son, Anthony Chavez of Philadelphia, PA, his daughter, Edna (Eddie) and grandsons Steven, Jason Chavez and Timothy Hernandez of Las Cruces, his brothers Ramon Chavez( Isabel) of Las Cruces, Pete Chavez ( Lela ) of Los Lunas, NM. His sisters Julia Hasty of T or C., Nellie Vallejos, Georgia Torres, Mary Martinez (Robert), Lucy Montoya of Las Cruces, NM,. Brother-in-law Fred Trujillo and family of Clovis, CA, along with aunts, uncle, nieces and nephews, cousins. His long-time companion of many years in Pennsylvania, Eva La Luz, Fred and Maribel La Luz and extended family. A visitation is scheduled at 10:30 AM with the Funeral Liturgy to begin at 11:00 AM on Monday, July 8, 2013, at St. Genevieve's Catholic Church, with Fr. Narciso Rivera officiating. Rite of Committal with military honors will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Steven Chavez, Timothy Hernandez, James Hasty, Gary Hasty, Michael Montoya, and Ronnie Montoya.
