Reba May (Pool) Strickland passed away on 1 July 2014 at The Heritage Assisted Living Center in Las Cruces, New Mexico, at age 96. She was a long time member of the First Baptist Church in Las Cruces. Reba was a bright, loving and cheerful mother, grandmother, and great grandmother to all in the family. She was born 10 May 1918 in Groom, Carson County, Texas, and was the youngest child of Virgil "Bill" Pool and Mary Alma (Roberson) Pool. She was preceded in death by her husband Connie, her parents, brothers O. B. and Jack Pool, and sister Lois Whatley, as well as a daughter Penny Ann Garnham. Reba graduated in 1939 from what is now called West Texas A&M University at Canyon, Texas. She went on to teach at the high school level for a short time, but her real love was third and fifth grades at the elementary level. She was a wonderful teacher, and her pupils really responded to her quiet and thoughtful teaching. She taught and retired from the El Paso, Texas, area schools such as Scotsdale Elemetary and St. Clements, and was selected one year as the Teacher of the Year for the Ysleta Independent School District. Reba was an artist in several mediums such as oil painting, watercolors, and was a masterful seamstress. On 28 February 1942 she married her sweetheart Alexander Conwell "Connie" Strickland, Jr. in Tulsa Oklahoma. They had a short time together before he left for Europe to serve in the 8th Air Force in England as a B-17 pilot. She said she always knew that he'd return from the war, and their family subsequently grew as children were born Mary Pamela (husband Austin Vick) and Penny Ann (husband Harry Garnham) and later Susan Jane (husband Les Hawley) and Alex III (wife Debra Wilcox). As grandchildren and great grandchildren were added to the family, there were many happy times and memories we hold dear. Reba was a loving grandmother to Andrew Seymour of Silver Spring, MD, Robb Seymour of Arlington, VA, Heather Strickland of Denver, CO, and Zachary Strickland of Jacksonville, FL; as well as to Pam's Ray children and Debra's Finesilver children. She loved the little ones that included great grandchildren Aidan and Andrew Seymour of Arlington, VA; Kylie Seymour and Lauren Remington of Silver Spring, MD, and Caroline Strickland of Denver, CO. She who made our world go around… Reba will be buried in the Strickland family plot in the Post Oak Cemetery, Oglesby, Coryell County, Texas, along side her husband Connie and five generations of the family. She held a quiet and strong faith in the Lord, and we are comforted in knowing that she now is in Heaven with no more physical struggles. There have been many caregivers and medical doctors and personnel who have been involved in her care over the past fourteen years, and we hold each and every one of them in our hearts for their cheerfulness and loving attendance. Theirs is a true calling, and the opportunity to brighten someone's day is an opportunity they always met as they interacted with this sweet and cheerful person.
