Salvador Herrera Sr., 82, of Las Cruces, passed away June 14, 2014. He was born March 6, 1932, in San Pedro, California. Sal went to be with his beloved wife, Victoria "Vicky" Herrera, just two months after her passing. Thanks to La Posada-Mesilla Valley Hospice, Sal was able to spend his last few days at home to go in peace with family and friends at his side. Sal was a hardworking man. He enlisted into the Army National Guard in 1949 and was honorably discharged in 1955 as a technical sergeant. Sal's career at the waterfront for 44 years brought him many lifetime friends in the San Pedro and Wilmington area in Southern California. Always the life of the party with his never ending jokes, he kept smiles on people's faces where ever he was. Sal loved to dance and teach the Cha-Cha. He loved his curly black-haired dog. His legacy lives on with his five sons, Salvador Jr., Michael, David, Peter and Ricardo Herrera, all of California; three daughters, Anna Dupierre, of Arizona, Cristina Pedrogon and Catherina Herrera; one brother, Joe Herrera; and two sisters, Mary Herrera and Connie Montelongo, all of California. Other survivors include numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Sal was preceded in death by four sisters. At his request cremation will take place. A memorial service will be held in San Pedro at a later date.
