It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, Ernesto "Neto" Alvarez c., age 93, a lifelong resident of Las Cruces on Tuesday, December 11, 2012. He passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family. "Neto", has he was fondly known to family and friends, was born May 3, 1919 in Doña Ana to Rosas and Maria Luisa Costales Alvarez. He was very proud to have served his country honorably in the United States Army Air Corps during WWII as a Staff Sergeant in the 448th Bombardment Group Heavy. In 1978 he retired from White Sands Missile Range as a sheet metal fabrication supervisor. Neto was a Little League baseball coach for the Conlee Blues in the 1960's and later the number one fan for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren's sports teams. In his early years he enjoyed dancing with his beautiful wife, Anita and playing "huachas" with his brothers. He also enjoyed fishing, camping, picking chili and wild asparagus, and making chicharrones with his sons. Later in life he enjoyed spending time at is daughter's café, which he so greatly helped prosper and grow. Neto had an incredible and special bond with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his greatest joy in life was spending his days watching them play and grow. Those left to mourn his passing include two sons, Ernie L. Alvarez and wife Elaine of Dallas, Texas and Raymond L. Alvarez and wife Rita of El Paso, Texas; one daughter, Rosella Tirre and husband Paul of Las Cruces; three brothers, Gilbert Alvarez and wife Esther, Ruben Alvarez and wife Dora, Carlos Alvarez and wife Ralfie all of Las Cruces; two sisters, Lillian Vasquez of Las Cruces and Mary Lou Barela and husband Johnny of Doña Ana. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Anita Alvarez in 2000, a daughter, Beatrice Lucero in 2007, a son, Rudy Alvarez in 2011, two brothers, David and Arturo Alvarez, and a sister Delia Apodaca.
