Donald V. Aicardi, 71, of Las Cruces, beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother, lost his valiant battle with cancer on Feb. 4, 2013. Born Sept. 29, 1941 in Oakland, Calif., he grew up in Daly City, Calif. After high school graduation in 1959 he joined the U.S. Navy, serving four years, with an honorable discharge. He married and fathered two daughters. After completing a four-year apprenticeship, he became a certified Cummins diesel mechanic, working at that trade for several years in San Francisco. After his marriage failed, he took a year's sabbatical and traveled throughout Europe with a pack on his back. Returning to the U.S., he settled in Ukiah, Calif. and enrolled in college. There he met and married Marilyn Whitmill. They moved to Forestville, Calif. where he completed his education at Sonoma State University. In 1995 he and his wife retired and moved to Mexico where they lived for six and one-half years. In 2002, they moved to Las Cruces. Donald was an active volunteer for several organizations, giving freely of his time and his heart. He was an active member of the local AARP chapter and served on its board of directors. He will be missed by all who knew him. Survivors include his wife of 32 years, Marilyn; his daughters, Kristine Bouchard and Deborah Kratky; grandchildren, Nicholas, Lauren and Ryan; brother, Vincent Aicardi; and stepchildren, Amber Whitmill and Steven Whitmill, and a step-granddaughter, Megan Yarnell. As per his wishes, there will be no local services. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Baca's Funeral Chapels and Sunset Crematory, 300 E. Boutz Road, Las Cruces. 527-2222.
