Douglas J. Hicks passed away August 16, 2014, in Las Cruces, NM. He was born Dec. 1st, 1925 to Alice (Press) and George Hicks in Toronto, Canada. When he was 17 he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and was trained as a tail gunner. After several successful missions, they were shot down, and he spent time as a prisoner of war. When he returned to Canada, he continued his job at Air Canada, the job he had held since he was 16 years of age. In 1956 he married "his bride", Madeleine (Ford) Hicks, who was a stewardess for Air Canada. They were married for over 54 years until she passed in 2011. In the early 1960's he was transferred to JFK Airport, then Laguardia, while they lived in Massapequa Park, NY. In 1983 he retired after over 42 years with the company, and moved to Las Cruces. He is survived by his five children. Katherine (Trini) Valdez of Las Cruces, Candace (Kevin) Muldowney of Atlanta, Brian (Cynthia) Hicks of New Jersey, Janet (Alan) Broda of New York, and John (Marcia) Hicks of New Jersey. He has 16 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He loved to tinker with cars, electronics and the ham radio. He was self taught, and trained us kids to say "my dad can do anything." And he could. We would like to thank the staff at the Haciendas at Grace Village, Dr. Glick, and his nurse, Janet, and all the staff at Ambercare Hospice. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m., Wed. Aug. 20, 2014 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Cathedral, 1240 S. Espina St., Las Cruces. He will be laid to rest immediately following at Hillcrest Memorial Garden Cemetery, 5140 W. Picacho, Las Cruces.
