Elwood M. Powell, 88, of Las Cruces, died Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2012. Woody as he was fondly known was born Sept. 25, 1923 in Kirkwood, Mo. to Elwood and Garland Powell. He was a veteran of the US Army where he served our country honorably during WW II; he also was retired from the US Postal Service after many years of faithful service. Woody was a member of First Assembly of God, a councilor for the Dona Ana Drug Court and one of the director's of Southwest Counseling. He enjoyed the outdoors and golfing but his passion was for bowling where he won numerous medals for participating in the Senior Olympics. Woody also enjoyed Jazz where he had an expansive record collection. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. He is survived by his loving wife of 18 years Dorothy Powell of the family home; step-son Jeffrey Virkus; step-daughter Vickie Evans; sister Betty Rummel and husband Phillip; grandchildren John Evans and Joleen Lopez and husband Bobby and by his great-grandchildren Harmony and Chloe Lopez and by many nieces, nephews and friends. Woody was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister. Memorial Services to celebrate his life will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2012 at First Assembly of God with Pastor James Gildon officiating. The US Army will provide military honors. Burial of Woody's cremains will take place at a later date at Ft. Bliss National Cemetery.
