Gita Brown Obituary

Gita Busjeet Brown lost her courageous battle with brain cancer on Nov. 3, 2012 in Maastricht, Netherlands. She was born in Washington, D.C. on July 28, 1982 to Marieke Beker and Vinod Busjeet and she moved to Maastricht at the age of 6. Her K-12 education was in Holland; her undergraduate program in England; and her master's degree at Johns Hopkins University where one year of the program was spent in Bologna, Italy. She majored in international development with an emphasis in Latin America, and this prepared her for her work with the World Bank in Washington, D.C. after graduation. Speaking more than five different languages, she worked with countries such as Brazil and Peru to evaluate programs and determine which programs were most effective. Gita is survived by her parents, her loving husband, Jeremy Brown, father and mother-in-law, Maury and Susan Brown; brothers-in-law, Michael and Adam Brown; sister-in-law, Season Brown; many aunts, uncles, and cousins in the Netherlands, Washington, D.C., and Mauritius; and her beloved little dog, Shatzie. The family is very thankful that Gita received excellent care from the staff at the National Institutes of Health, Johns Hopkins University Medical Center, and Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. Everyone hopes that Gita's contribution to research will benefit future brain cancer patients. There was a celebration of her life on Nov. 8, 2012 in Maastricht and another celebration of her life will be Dec. 1, 2012 hosted by the John Hopkins University in Washington, D.C. As per Gita's request, a scholarship in her name will be provided for students studying in the masters program at Johns Hopkins University with a specialty in Latin American studies.
