Johnnie Shumaker Beeson, 84, of Anthony, Texas died in El Paso, TX August 28, 2007, at Sierra Medical Center following a long battle against lung disease. Born March 14, 1923, Johnnie moved from Mississippi as a small child, with her parents, an older sister, a younger brother, and several other relatives. After driving across Texas, on mostly dirt roads, they finally arrived at their destination, New Mexico. They settled in the Anthony area where her father, Lloyd Shumaker, soon became foreman of the Haas farms. Johnnie attended schools in the Anthony area until her family moved on to Las Cruces for a few years where she graduated 8th grade from Dona Ana School as Valedictorian of her class and graduated from Las Cruces High School.
Johnnie worked for various businesses in the Anthony area and later worked with her husband in their electrical business in Alamagordo, NM. When her husband suffered cancer and a stroke, they moved back to Anthony. Johnnie worked again in Anthony including for the First National Bank and, more recently, for the Western Bank, where Johnnie was Branch Manager for several years (both banks have now changed ownership and names).
Johnnie was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Beeson, and by her parents, father Lloyd Shumaker and mother Thelma Shumaker Harbert. She was also preceded in death by her brother, James Winborn "Jake" Shumaker who was killed in action at the Battle of the Bulge during World War II.
Johnnie Beeson is survived by her son, Russell Beeson and his wife Nancy of Anthony, by three grandsons, Jared, Jody, and Joshua Beeson of Tulsa, Oklahoma, by two sisters, Marleen Shipp of Anthony and Beth Berry of Alamogordo, NM, by her sister-in-law, Billie Faye Shumaker Pulis of Las Cruces, NM and by 6 nephews and 3 nieces.
A Memorial Service and reception will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 22, 2007 at the West Valley Fire Department building, 510 E. Vinton Road, Vinton, Texas. The service will be conducted by E. Yates Folk, Jr. minister for the Church of Christ at Anthony, assisted by Guy W. Pearce of Anthony, TX. A short reception and visitation will follow the service.
Following the cremation by Hillcrest Funeral Home, 5054 Doniphan Dr. the cremated remains will be interred at the foot of her husband's (Paul Beeson's) grave in the Anthony Community Cemetery.
