Martha June Morehart, passed away peacefully on Feb. 5, 2013, after suffering a stroke. She was born Jan. 23, 1922, in Cisco, Texas. She earned a bachelor of arts, a master of arts, and a master of library science. During her 43-year teaching career in Texas, she taught high school English and Spanish, was band director and choir director, and was the high school librarian. After retiring, she lived in Ruidoso before moving to Las Cruces in 1996. Martha was a gifted pianist and organist and played her first piano recital at age 3. She was a church organist and played the organ and piano on many occasions. Martha lived independently in her home past her 91st birthday. She demonstrated her great tenacity and independence by fully recovering from a broken hip at age 90, living independently, going shopping and driving. She enjoyed music, wood carving, reading, and watching sports on TV, particularly professional tennis. Martha is survived by her nephew Thomas Morehart, his wife Kaaren, and Paul Cowan of Las Cruces. Other survivors include great nephews and nieces, including Jeff Morehart, Chris Cowan, Lynn Cowan, Pat Cowan and Jennifer (Morehart) Hartin. She was predeceased by her parents Berton E. and Maud Pearl Morehart, brother W. Frank Morehart, sister Mary Jane (Morehart) Borman and niece Mary Ann (Morehart) Cowan. A graveside service was held in Cisco, Texas and a celebration of life will be held at Trails West Clubhouse on Saturday, Feb. 16 at 3 p.m. Friends from outside Trails West should call Tom Morehart at 522-2166 about entering the gated community.
