Lt. Col. (Ret.) Robert "Bob" Charles Lory, 90, of Las Cruces entered eternal life Thursday, April 18, 2013 at Memorial Medical Center after a long illness. He was born July 21, 1922 in Elmhurst, Ill., to Carl Kurt and Anna Matilda Geib Lory. Robert served his country honorably in the U.S. Army Air Corps and was a World War II veteran in the Eighth Air Force and was also in the Air Force Reserve retiring in 1982 after 40 years of service. Lt. Col. Lory was an aircrew bombardier and turret gunner for 30 combat missions and 200 combat hours prior to D-Day in 1944. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and five Air medals in addition to his Army Air Corps Campaign and service medals. He lived in Illinois for many years and then moved to Washington state and then to Los Alamos, in 1956, finally moving to Las Cruces in 1993. Robert was a member of the Elks Club, the Reserve Officers Association and the local United Veterans Council, as well as the First Presbyterian Church. Survivors include five children, Judith Ann McGraw of Dennison, Texas, James Robert Lory of Spring, Texas, John Charles Lory of Colorado Springs, Colo., Jeffery Kurt Lory of Las Cruces, and Jay Richard Lory of Chandler, Ariz. Other survivors include 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife Minerva "Mickey" Elizabeth Lory on Sept. 9, 2000, two brothers, Charles and Richard and a sister, Dolores. At his request cremation has taken place and a memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m., Wednesday, April 24, 2013 in Baca's Chapel of Prayer, 300 E. Boutz Road, with Rev. Dr. Norm Story, pastor, officiating. Military honors will be accorded by the New Mexico National Guard Honor Guard and the Marine Corps League- El Perro Diablo Detachment. Inurnment of cremains will be held at Santa Fe National Cemetery in June 2013. Entrusted to the care of Baca's Funeral Chapels and Sunset Crematory of Las Cruces. 527-2222.
