Sylvester Aguirre Obituary
Sylvester "Sly" A. Aguirre, 59, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, Dec. 9, 2013 at Memorial Medical Center surrounded by his loved ones. He was born June 17, 1954 in Las Cruces to Silvestre M. and Simona Sandoval Aguirre. "Sly", as he was fondly known to his family and friends, served his country honorably in the U.S. Navy and retired as a codes enforcement officer from the City of Las Cruces after 34 years of combined service. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, the Las Cruces Police Officer's Association and the Police Athletic League. He was a true athlete at heart, an avid Dallas Cowboys and Los Angeles Lakers fan. Sly was a communicant of Immaculate Heart of Mary Cathedral. Those left to mourn his passing include two brothers, Frank Aguirre and wife Veronica and Steve Aguirre, all of Las Cruces; four daughters, Juanita Carta and husband Guerrero, Bea A. Rodriguez and husband Tommy, Cynthia A. Fisher and husband Tony, all of Las Cruces and Stella Rugely and husband Donald of Austin, Tex.; his loving fiancée, Della Singh Sanchez; his daughter Camille Rivera and her sons who were his very special grandsons, Roman and Anthony Rivera, all of Las Cruces. Other survivors include numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents. Sly will be reposing Monday, Dec. 16, 2013 from 3 to 5 p.m. in Baca's Chapel of Prayer, 300 E. Boutz Road. Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be the same evening at 7:30 p.m. in Immaculate Heart of Mary Cathedral, 1240 S. Espina, where the Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2013 at 10 a.m. with Rev. Martin Cordero officiating. The Rite of Committal and Interment will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens Cemetery, 5140 W. Picacho with military honors accorded by a U.S. Navy Honor Guard and the Marine Corps League - El Perro Diablo Detachment. Serving as casket bearers will be Roman and Anthony Rivera, Tony Fisher II, Tommy Rodriguez Jr., J.R. "Ray" Stewart and Vincent P. Aguirre. Honorary bearers will be David and Alma Cortez, Danny Acosta, Rosie Stewart, Leo Borunda, First Gentleman of NM Charles "Chuck" Franco, Zeke Cena, Dennis Lovato, Ralph Rios, Robbie Green, his nephews, brothers-in-law, the Las Cruces Police Department Honor Guard and the Las Cruces Codes Enforcement Officers.
