It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Dolores "Lola" Anaya Calderon, 82, of Las Cruces, on Monday, Feb. 10, 2014. Lola, as she was fondly known to her family and friends, was born on March 17, 1931, to Pedro and Inez Anaya in San Antonio, N.M. Lola married the love of her life, Johnny Calderon, on Aug. 8, 1945 at St. Patrick's Cathedral in El Paso, Texas. After many years of service, Lola retired from American Linen and as a head cook of Las Cruces Munson Senior Center. Lola enjoyed her retirement, which included going camping; cooking for her family and going to the casinos. When asked if she had won anything, she would respond with a smile, "Nomas el camino a la casa." Those left to mourn her passing include two daughters, Rosie Rico, and husband, Joe, of Las Cruces, Katie Lopez and husband, Michael, of San Dimas, Calif.; two sons, Raymond A. Calderon of Las Cruces, and Richard Calderon and wife Rosanna of Tucson, Ariz.; a sister, Deluvina Lopez also of Las Cruces; a brother, Evangelio Anaya of Albuquerque. Other survivors include 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny Calderon; a son, Peter Calderon and a brother, Juan Anaya. Visitation for Lola will begin at 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 14, 2014, in St. Genevieve's Catholic Church, 100 S. Espina, where the prayer vigil is scheduled for 7 p.m. The Holy Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014, in the Basilica de San Albino, 2290 Calle Principal in Mesilla by the Most Rev. Bishop Emeritus Ricardo Ramirez. The Rite of Committal and Interment will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens Cemetery, 5140 W. Picacho, where she will be laid to rest alongside her loving husband, Johnny. Family and friends will gather for fellowship following the service at St. Genevieve's Parish Hall, 1025 E. Las Cruces Ave. Serving as casket bearers will be Patrick Serna, David Rico, Jason, Nic and Anthony Calderon, and Gilbert Lujan. Honorary bearer will be Daniel Calderon. Lola's family would like to thank Petra Espinoza of Amber Care Hospice of the love and care she provided for our mom. "What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead." -- Nelson Mandela. Descansa en pas mama!
