Chester W. Tomei, of Cloudcroft, N.M., entered eternal life on Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014, after a brief illness. He was born on June 2, 1938, in Brownfield, Texas. Chester was raised in Brownfield by his grandmother Pearl Sutton. At the age of 8, he moved to Flint, Mich., where in third grade he met the future love of his life, Kay. Chester and Kay Tomei were married on April 12, 1958. In 1970, Chester and Kay relocated to Las Cruces, N.M., where they lived until Chester's retirement from the tile setting business (Tomei Tile Company). They then moved permanently to their vacation home in Cloudcroft. Chester held his family closest to his heart. He enjoyed spending time at his home in Cloudcroft; painting, woodworking, reading and lots of relaxing. He looked forward every year to being the camp cook and constant entertainment for his son-in-law Donnie, and Todd and Kip Garrison, on their annual camping and hunting trips. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Kay Tomei, of the family home; his five children: Lester (Casey) Tomei, of Tempe, Ariz., Delphine Tomei of Las Cruces, Susan (Terry) Spence of Colorado Springs, Colo., Linda (Artie) Gomez of Los Lunas, N.M., and Marlena Beyer of Mesilla Park, N.M. Chester has seven grandchildren: Bridget (Josh) Black; Daniel Gomez; Tyler (Ashley) Beyer, A.J. and Caroline Spence; Marissa and Michael Gomez. He was blessed with three great-grandchildren, Cheyenne and Dalton Black, and Adelyn Faith Beyer. Other survivors include his brother, Eddie Joe (Cindy) Tomei of California, and his wonderful sister-in-law, Betty Tomei, of Las Cruces, as well as numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews, and the entire Garrison Family, who loved him dearly. He was preceded in death by his father, Wendell Stephens, his mother and step-father Velma and Edmardo Tomei; his twin brother and best friend, Lester Tomei; his beautiful sister and brother-in-law, Loucille and Clyde Sims; his son-in-law, Donnie Beyer and his nephew, David Tomei. At Chester's request, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. in Baca's Chapel of Prayer, 300 E. Boutz Road, with Larry Hawkins officiating. In lieu of flowers, family has requested that donations be made in his name to Mesilla Valley Hospice, 299 E. Montana Ave., Las Cruces, NM 88005.
